Abdulkadir Sabri Toprak
Dr. Abdulkadir Sabri Toprak, born in Turkish Kurdistan, was a Kurdish doctor and political activist. Forced into exile due to political persecution in Turkey, he settled in Sulaymaniyah, Southern Kurdistan. There, he worked in a private clinic and became a member of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party, a pro-Kurdish political party in Turkey. On 29 February 2024, Dr. Toprak was assassinated in broad daylight in the Baxan district of Sulaymaniyah. He was shot multiple times by an unidentified assailant, resulting in his immediate death. The circumstances of the crime suggest a targeted attack, and many observers suspect the involvement of Turkish intelligence services. The DEM Party issued a statement accusing the Turkish government of orchestrating the assassination, highlighting it as part of a broader pattern of attacks on Kurdish political activists in exile. Dr. Toprak was a father of three children. His death has raised concerns about the safety of Kurdish political refugees in the region and has been condemned by various Kurdish political organisations.
