Abdullad bin Mohammed bin Nasser Al-Araimi
Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Nasser Al-Araimi is an Omani poet, activist, and advocate for reform who has been targeted by the authorities for his peaceful expression of views. He was among the many citizens who took part in the 2011 protests in Oman, demonstrations that called for greater political freedoms, social justice, and measures to fight corruption. Through his poetry and public activism, Al-Araimi became a voice for reform, expressing the aspirations of citizens who sought accountability and change. On 16 July 2012, the Court of First Instance in Muscat sentenced Al-Araimi to one year in prison on charges of “insulting the Sultan.” His conviction, like that of other activists, reflected the authorities’ systematic use of vague and overly broad charges to criminalize peaceful expression and criticism of state policies. In addition to the prison term, Al-Araimi was fined 1,000 Omani rials (approximately USD 2,600). He and the others sentenced were released on bail pending appeal.
