Abdullah Hamad Mubarak Al-Khourousy
Abdullah Hamad Mubarak Al-Khourousy is an Omani poet and human rights defender involved in pro-reform activism during the 2012 wave of protests in Oman. Known for his online writings and participation in peaceful demonstrations, he was targeted by the authorities amid a broader crackdown on bloggers, writers, and activists calling for political and social reforms following labour strikes in the petroleum sector.
He was arrested in June 2012 and prosecuted with three other activists : Hamoud Saud Hamdan Al-Rashidy, Ali Hilal Al-Mikbaly, and Mahmoud Hamad Thani Al-Rawahy. The charges against him included insulting the Sultan and violating Oman’s information technology law due to posts he had shared on social media. The judge refused bail during both hearings, and the trial was conducted partly in secret, attended mainly by lawyers and family members.
On 9 July 2012, Al-Khourousy was convicted and sentenced to a year in prison for his alleged online writings. He was granted bail of 100 Omani rials (around 260 USD) while awaiting the outcome of his appeal.
