Abdullah Mohammed Al-Gilani
Abdullah Mohammed Al-Ghailani (Al-Gilani) is an Omani human rights defender and activist who has been actively involved in promoting civil liberties, freedom of expression, and the rights of peaceful protesters. He participated in the 2011 reform protests in Oman, which were part of the wider Arab Spring movement, advocating for social and political reforms and greater governmental accountability.
On 11 June 2012, Al-Ghailani was arrested during a peaceful protest in Muscat along with other human rights defenders. He faced charges related to participating in an unauthorized public assembly and allegedly blocking a road, which he and other activists have consistently denied. During his detention, Al-Ghailani, like many of his colleagues, reportedly had no access to legal counsel and was not given the opportunity to review evidence or adequately prepare a defense. He and other detainees also faced inadequate detention conditions, including limited access to medical care.
On 16 July 2012, the Court of First Instance in Muscat sentenced several human rights defenders, including Al-Ghailani, for their involvement in the protest. Following an appeal, on 17 March 2013, the Court of Appeal in Muscat ordered his release on bail of 200 Omani Rials (around 520 dollars), as his charges related solely to assembly and not to “insulting the Sultan.”
