Abdullah Salem Abdullah Al-Badi
Abdullah Salem Abdullah Al-Badi is an Omani protester from the province of Sohar who was arrested for participating in peaceful demonstrations calling for economic reforms, jobs and governmental accountability, and whose detention and subsequent release reflect broader restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression in Oman. Al-Badi, then aged about 30, joined the popular protests that took place in Sohar and other Omani provinces in late May 2021, where youth and job seekers gathered to call on authorities to address high unemployment and other economic grievances. These protests were reported to be peaceful in nature but nonetheless met with detentions of participants. Around 28 May 2021, Omani security forces arrested Al-Badi along with other peaceful protesters including Abdullah Salem Obaid Al-Badi, Mohammed Al-Qarini and Nahyan Al-Badi on charges including participating in a gathering of more than ten people without a permit and violating Covid-19 precautionary measures, charges commonly used against peaceful demonstrators, and he was detained under the supervision of the Royal Oman Police Command. Al-Badi was held in detention for several weeks before being permitted to secure his release on bail on 12 June 2021, and the more serious charges against him were reportedly dropped with only the lesser charges retained. There are no credible reports of further prolonged detention following his release.
