Abdullah Salem Obaid Al-Badi
Abdullah Salem Obaid Al-Badi is an Omani protester from the province of Saham who was arrested for participating in peaceful demonstrations demanding reform, jobs and an end to corruption and whose arrest and subsequent release illustrate broader restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression in Oman. Al-Badi took part in the popular protests that began in Sohar in late May 2021 and subsequently spread to other provinces, where job seekers and youth called on the authorities to address high unemployment, economic grievances and governmental accountability. These protests were peaceful in nature but nonetheless met with detentions of participants. On 28 May 2021, at the age of 23, Al-Badi was arrested by Omani security forces on charges including participating in a gathering of more than ten people without a permit and violating Covid-19 precautionary measures, as well as other charges initially brought against him and fellow protesters such as incitement to assembly and alleged misuse of information technology, reflecting the legal constraints used against peaceful demonstrators. He was held in Sohar Central Prison under the supervision of the Royal Oman Police Command for more than two weeks, during which he remained formally detained before being permitted to secure his release on bail on 12 June 2021. The more serious charges against him were subsequently dropped, with only the lesser charges retained, and he was not reported to have faced further prolonged detention.
