Abulsalam Darwish Al-Marzouqi

Abdulsalam Darwish Al-Marzouqi (also spelled as Al-Marzooqi) is a prominent Emirati educator and human rights defender who has been subjected to prolonged arbitrary detention and judicial harassment by the United Arab Emirates authorities. He was initially arrested on 24 July 2012 as part of the “UAE94” case, (a mass trial targeting 94 individuals, including intellectuals and activists, accused of having ties with the al-Islah organisation). Following his arrest, Abdulsalam Darwish Al-Marzouqi was held in solitary confinement in a secret location for eight months. On 02 July 2013, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by three years of probation. Despite completing his sentence, he remained detained and was later retried in the “UAE84” case. On 10 July 2024, the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal sentenced him to life imprisonment, equivalent to 25 years, along with 42 other individuals. Abdulsalam Darwish Al-Marzouqi’s family has also faced reprisals.
