Ahmed Al-Blushi
Ahmed Al-Blushi is an Omani Internet activist and human rights defender who has been subjected to harassment and arbitrary arrest by the Internal Security Service in Oman. On 4 August 2015, he was arrested alongside fellow human rights defender and blogger Muktar Al-Hanaei while they were traveling from Oman to the United Arab Emirates. After several hours in detention, Al-Blushi was released, while Al-Hanaei continued to be held incommunicado at the Special Division in Al-Qurum, Muscat. Although Al-Blushi’s detention was shorter than that of his colleague, his arrest forms part of a wider and systematic campaign of intimidation, surveillance, and arbitrary detention targeting human rights defenders and online activists in Oman. His case underscores the ongoing risks faced by activists in the country, where the Internal Security Service has been accused of ratifying and carrying out plans to silence dissent.
