Ahmed Hussein Muhalhal
Ahmed Hussein Muhalhal is a civil society activist living in Iraq. On 25 February 2024, he was sentenced to three years of imprisonment for allegedly burning the Basra Governorate building on 14 September 2018, while he was participating in a demonstration. His colleagues confirmed that the charge was malicious, and that his protesting had been peaceful. Muhalhal participated actively in the popular protests that started in September 2018, which demanded improved public services, support for marginalised groups, and an end to corruption. On 01 April 2024, after a wave of solidarity protests, Muhalhal’s sentence was overturned and he was released.
