Ahmed Maher
Ahmed Maher is a journalist who was imprisoned in Yemen on 06 August 2022 after being arrested at his home by armed men affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council on charges of spreading false and misleading news and forging official documents. On 03 September 2022, the Southern Media Centre published a video allegedly showing Maher’s confession, which his family later stated was obtained “under the pressure of threats, coercion and torture” after visiting him in October 2022. Throughout his detention, Maher carried out several hunger strikes to demand a fair trial, with the most recent one beginning on 17 January 2023. On 25 December 2024, the Specialised Criminal Appeals Court in Aden acquitted Maher, who had been initially sentenced to four years in prison. He was released from Bir Ahmed prison on 18 January 2025 after spending two and a half years in detention, during which he was reportedly subjected to kidnapping, torture, forced confessions, and unjust accusations.
