Ahmed Mansoor

Ahmed Mansoor Ali Abdullah Al-Abd Al-Shehhi, born in 1969, is an Emirati engineer and human rights activist. He is a member of GCHR’s advisory board and member of the Human Rights Watch advisory committee of the Middle East and North Africa division. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders.

On 20 March 2017, he was arrested for his human rights activism, including his posts criticising human rights violations on social media, and sentenced to 10 years in prison and a fine amounting to one million UAE dirhams in May 2018 after being unfairly convicted of the offence of “insulting the status and prestige of the UAE and its symbols including its leaders” in reprisal for his peaceful human rights activism, including through his posts on social media. Ahmed Mansoor was subjected to grave violations during his detention, including solitary confinement and being prevented from accessing necessary health care, which led to a significant deterioration of his health condition. Reliable local sources confirmed that he suffers from high blood pressure and general fatigue. Since his arrest, Mansoor has been held in solitary confinement in Al-Sadr prison in Abu Dhabi.

In December 2023, Mansoor was among the 84 defendants charged in the widely-criticised “UAE84” case, which utilises fabricated terrorism charges in order to illegally extend the sentences of the accused, none of whom have committed any new offences. As a result, on 10 July 2024, Mansoor was sentenced to 15 years in prison. His sentence was upheld on appeal on 4 March 2025.
