Alia’a Al-Shabi
Alia’a Al-Shabi, a Yemeni human rights defender and President of the Al-Faisal Organization, has for months endured a sustained campaign of harassment, threats and intimidation linked to her advocacy on behalf of victims of arbitrary arrest, torture and enforced disappearance. In her hometown of Aden, images of her were publicly burned by angry citizens protesting her participation in the National Dialogue Conference, which began in Sana’a on 18 March 2012. Despite receiving serious threats via phone calls and text messages urging her to cease her work, she maintained her commitment to documenting disappearance cases and engaging with authorities. On 18 October 2013, a member of the Yemeni Socialist Party, Mohammed Al-Awlaki, posted a threatening letter on Facebook stating “you dig your grave by yourself,” a reference to her role as vice-chair of the committee supporting martyrs’ families. The Gulf Centre for Human Rights regards these actions as directly targeting her legitimate human rights work and expresses grave concern for her physical and psychological safety, calling on Yemeni authorities to carry out a prompt and impartial investigation, ensure her protection, and uphold the rights of all human rights defenders and journalists to operate without fear of reprisals.
