Ali Abbas (Larry)

Ali Abbas (Larry) is an environmental activist and artist from Iraq. He is the founder of the “It’s Not my Garbage, But It’s My Homeland” campaign, and has been volunteering since 2019. He has worked to rehabilitate several streets and heritage locations, cleaning up garbage, painting murals, and planting greenery. On 9 July 2023, he was arrested by a force affiliated with the Intelligence Department in the city of Nasiriyah, the capital of Dhi Qar Governorate, and was not released until the next day. His arrest was a result of false accusations that a mural of his depicted the former dictator Saddam Hussein, when in reality it depicted the late poet Erian Al-Sayyid Khalaf. He was also falsely accused of receiving funding from the banned Baath Party. In detention, he was tortured, and forced to sign a pledge to cease his volunteer activities. He continued to defend his initiative after his release.
