Ali Mahmoud Othman
Ali Mahmoud Othman, of Syrian origin, is a citizen journalist and media activist from Homs known as the “Eyes of Baba Amr” and “Jeddo”, who became head of the makeshift media centre Baba Amr News. He was arbitrarily arrested on 28 March 2012 in Aleppo after being lured by a text message and was transferred to detention in Damascus where he was subjected to torture and forced to give a televised “confession”. His work included providing footage to international media, conducting live face-uncovered interviews, guiding journalists to frontlines and hospitals, and helping injured civilians to safety, all under extremely dangerous conditions. After years of disappearance, his family was informed in April 2019 that he had died in government custody on 30 December 2013, 21 months after his arrest. His family continue to seek official confirmation of his death and the return of his body.
