Amal Basha

Amal Basha is a Yemeni women’s rights activist, chair of the Sisters Arab Forum for Human Rights, academic and lawyer by training, who studied political science, economics and mass communication and additional postgraduate training in women’s studies at Sana’a University and in international development and gender studies at the University of Sussex. She rose to prominence as a defender of women, prisoners and refugees in Yemen, notably confronting conservative political figures (challenging Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar during the National Dialogue Conference in April 2013) earning recognition such as the Takreem Arab Woman of the Year Award in 2014 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto in 2017. Throughout Yemen’s violent civil war she remained a vocal advocate for peace and accountability, condemning indiscriminate bombing and human rights abuses and emphasising that “no space is safe anymore”, including mosques. Her continued advocacy, which includes calling for women’s meaningful participation in peace processes, has placed her at grave risk amid targeting of human rights defenders in wartime, with SAF operations severely impeded by intense insecurity and threats to personal safety.
