Amer Al-Khafaji
Sheikh Amer Al-Khafaji is a civil society activist from Iraq who has been repeatedly targeted by security forces due to his outspoken criticism of local authorities and his advocacy for citizens’ rights. On 12 November 2024, he was arrested by the Ministry of Interior’s Intelligence Agency in Dhi Qar Governorate and charged with inciting protests. He was detained without a warrant and released on bail on 2 December 2024, following a decision by the Central Investigation Court in Baghdad to release all detained civil society activists and demonstrators from Dhi Qar. His arrests and legal challenges reflect a broader pattern of suppression against activists in Iraq, particularly in Dhi Qar province, where authorities have been accused of targeting individuals involved in protests and civil society activities.
