Anas Al-Jamal
Anas Al-Jamal is a Jordanian activist of Palestinian origin and a former street vendor who has been repeatedly targeted by the authorities for his peaceful activism and online expression. On 05 November 2023, Al-Jamal was detained in Irbid and transferred to Amman in connection with three posts on X (formerly Twitter), including a video documenting law-enforcement officers blocking protesters in the Jordan Valley. His arrest came amid a broader crackdown on citizens filming or sharing evidence of policing practices during demonstrations. A Jordanian court convicted Al-Jamal under Article 24 of the Cybercrimes Law No. 17 of 2023 for posting the video and sentenced him to three months in prison and a fine of 5,000 Jordanian dinars. He was released on 13 January 2024 after a crowdfunding effort covered the fine. Previously, Al-Jamal had also faced harassment and arrest under charges such as “disturbing relations with a friendly country” over social media posts criticising Arab states ties with Israel, illustrating how activists in Jordan remain under persistent threat of prosecution for exercising their right to free expression.
