Anas Al-Shaghri
Anas Al-Shaghri is a Syrian human rights defender and university student from Al-Bayda village near Baniyas. He was arrested on 14 May 2011 by Military Intelligence services during a raid following the suppression of protests, although some reports state the arrest occurred on 16 May 2011, and he has been forcibly disappeared since, with no reliable information about his fate or location, and even Syrian authorities denying any knowledge of his detention. His arrest (a direct result of his prominent role in organising peaceful demonstrations and speaking to international media under his real name) has made him a symbolic figure of the Syrian uprising.
