Arif Qatran

Arif Qatran is a Yemeni citizen and brother of Judge Abdulwahab Qatran. He was forcibly disappeared on 21 September 2025 along with his son Abdulsalam after Houthi forces raided their home in Sana’a without judicial warrants or providing any charges. On 24 September 2025, Judge Qatran issued an urgent appeal to local and international human rights organisations stating that his brother and nephew were held in the Hamdan Security Complex prison for only one day and that Arif was able to maintain brief contact with his family through a prisoner’s phone. In his last call on 22 September 2025, Qatran confirmed he was suffering from serious health conditions, including a severe curvature of the spine and neck, chronic stomach problems, irritable bowel syndrome, persistent vomiting and convulsions, noting that he had previously travelled to India in 2019 for medical treatment. He warned that he could not tolerate prison conditions and pleaded for urgent action to secure his release. Local sources reported that the arrests of Qatran and his son were linked to their celebration of the 26 September anniversary, the day marking the declaration of the Yemeni Republic, which is opposed by the Houthis.
