Ataullah Mousa Mohammed Al-Huwaiti
Ataullah Mousa Mohammed Al-Huwaiti is a Saudi citizen from the Al-Huwaitat tribe, known for his opposition to the displacement of his community due to the Neom project. He was arrested on 4 January 2021 after surrendering to the authorities, following reports that members of his tribe were being labeled as “terrorists.” During his detention, he was subjected to torture to coerce a confession that he and other tribe members had established a terrorist cell. On 5 August 2022, the Saudi Specialised Criminal Court sentenced Al-Huwaiti to death. The Court of Appeal upheld this sentence on 23 January 2023. His conviction was based on charges of establishing a terrorist cell and using social media to harm national unity. These charges are widely believed to be linked to his peaceful opposition to the forced displacement of his tribe for the Neom project.
