Ayham Mustafa Ghazzoul

Ayham Mostafa Ghazzoul was a Syrian dentist, master’s student and contributor to the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression. He was first arrested during the raid on SCM’s offices by Air Force Intelligence on 16 February 2012, held briefly and then released. On 5 November 2012, he was arrested again by members of the National Students Union at Damascus University and transferred to Military Air Force Intelligence Branch 215. He was tortured during interrogation and died in custody on 9 November 2012, four days after his arrest, though his family did not receive official confirmation until 12 May 2014, when a death certificate falsely citing “heart failure” from Tishreen Hospital was issued to conceal the circumstances of his death. His body was never returned to the family.
