Basma Sulaiman Al-Rajehi
Basma Sulaiman Al-Rajehi is an Omani human rights defender who became known for her involvement in peaceful activism during the wave of reforms demanded in Oman from 2011 onward. She was among a group of writers, bloggers and protesters targeted by Omani authorities in 2012 and 2013 for exercising their right to freedom of expression and assembly.In July and August 2012, Al-Rajehi and dozens of other activists were convicted by the Muscat Court of First Instance on charges including unlawful assembly, disturbing public order, violating the cyber law, and defaming the Sultan. On 9 February 2013, she, together with Basma Al-Kiyumi, Saeed Al-Hashmi, and fourteen other detainees, undertook a hunger strike in Samail Central Prison protesting the High Court’s delays in processing their appeals and denounced ill-treatment in detention. On 17 March 2013, Al-Rajehi was released on bail of 200 OMR (approximately 520 USD), alongside several other activists such as Basma Al-Kiyumi, Saeed Al-Hashemi, Bader Al-Jaberi, Abdullah and Nasser Al-Ghailani, Khalid Al-Nawfali, and Mohammed Al-Fazari.
