Dr. Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Marri is a Qatari citizen. On 27 August 2021, he was arrested in relation to posts he had made on X in support of peaceful protests that had occurred earlier that month, despite not participating in the protests himself, as well as a post he made calling for men not to post pictures of the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on social media networks. He was initially sentenced to four years in prison, but the sentence was reduced to two years in 2022. He was released in August 2023.
