Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Hamid
Dr. Abdulrahman Al‑Hamid is a Saudi Arabian academic and human rights defender, co‑founder and president of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), an independent civil society organisation advocating political reform and civil liberties in Saudi Arabia. He was arrested on 17 April 2014 after being summoned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau in al‑Qassim. In October 2015, following a trial before the Specialised Criminal Court, he was sentenced to nine years in prison, fined 50 000 Saudi Riyals (around 13 000 dollars) and given a nine‑year travel ban for charges including inciting public disorder, disrespecting authorities and participating in an unlicensed organisation. He was held incommunicado for nearly a year and denied access to family and legal counsel until after a hunger strike protesting his detention status. After completing his sentence, he was released on 10 January 2023 and remains subject to the nine‑year travel ban.
