Dr. Ali Ahmed Al-Madhwahi

Dr. Ali Ahmed Al-Madhwahi is a Yemen-based medical consultant, poet, intellectual, media professional, and unionist who was detained on 08 June 2024 when members of the Security and Intelligence Service stormed his office in Sana’a as part of a campaign targeting employees of international organisations. He remains in detention under the control of Houthi authorities. His wife, internet activist Safia Mohammed, uses her Facebook page to issue repeated pleas for his release. On 29 July 2025, she wrote: “I am Safia… the wife of an oppressed person, and the mother of a grieving child… For more than a year, my husband, Dr. Ali Ahmed Al-Madhwahi, has been forcibly detained… and every day the same question is repeated by his daughter, Yumna: When will Daddy come back?” On 01 August 2025, she further asked: “What conscience sleeps at ease every night when an oppressed person has been imprisoned behind closed doors for more than a year?” An  article published on 06 July 2025 in Al-Ndaa newspaper describes Dr. Al-Madhwahi as “distinguished by his open-heartedness, his ever-present smile, and his vast knowledge and understanding. In addition to his medical specialisation, in which he excels, he is an unrivalled poet, intellectual, media professional, and unionist. Despite his ability to emigrate to any corner of the world during the war years, he chose to remain in Sana’a to serve the people through his job and through the international organisations with which he works as a consultant.”
