Dr. Hisham Al-Hashemi was an Iraqi journalist and well-known security expert. On 06 July 2020, he was shot several times by an armed group on two motorcycles in front of his house in the Zayouna area in Baghdad. He was taken to Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Before his death, he had received threats regarding his participation in television programs where he discussed the illegal activities of armed militias in Iraq. He often expressed his opinions on his Twitter account, criticising corruption and defending the rights of Iraqi citizens. On 7 July 2020, a gathering was organised in Al-Tahrir Square, which denounced his assassination, accompanied by a symbolic funeral procession and a candle march around the square. Other sit-in squares paid tribute to him across Iraq.
