Dr. Khalaf Abdulrahman Al-Romaithi

Dr. Khalaf Abdulrahman Al-Romaithi is a prominent Emirati businessman and human rights advocate, previously sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison in 2013 as part of the “UAE94” case, which involved individuals accused of attempting to establish a secret organisation linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. In May 2023, Dr. Khalaf Abdulrahman Al-Romaithi was forcibly extradited from Jordan to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite Jordanian authorities having released him on bail and pending a court hearing. This extradition occurred without his family’s knowledge and in violation of both Jordanian constitutional law and international conventions, particularly the Convention Against Torture of 1984 (to which Jordan is a signatory). The United Nations Human Rights Council expressed grave concern over the potential for ill-treatment and urged the UAE to ensure full respect for his rights and to release all individuals imprisoned for exercising their freedoms of expression and association. Since his extradition, Dr. Khalaf Al-Romaithi’s whereabouts have remained unknown, and his life is considered to be at imminent risk due to the UAE’s poor human rights record. Human rights organisations have condemned the actions of both Jordan and the UAE, calling for immediate international intervention to prevent further violations and to ensure Dr. Al-Romaithi’s safety and rights are upheld.
