Dr. Khalid Al-Oudah
Dr. Khalid Al-Oudah is a Saudi academic and brother of prominent religious scholar Dr. Salman Al-Oudah, arrested on 12 September 2017. He was sentenced by the Saudi Specialized Criminal Court on 17 November 2020 to five years in prison followed by a five-year travel ban, for “showing sympathy” after his brother’s arrest and for holding both private and public employment simultaneously. During his pre-trial detention (almost four years before sentencing) and subsequent imprisonment, Khalid Al-Oudah was denied required medications, spent time in intensive care, developed heart disease, and was subjected to solitary confinement. His sentence was later increased by the Court of Appeal to eight years. On 26 June 2025, after nearly nine years of detention, Dr. Khalid Al-Oudah was released. He remained under a travel ban for five years and was released with an ankle monitor. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention issued Opinion No. 56/2023 concerning both Dr. Salman Fahd Al-Oudah and Dr. Khalid Al-Oudah, concluding their detention is arbitrary, violates international human rights law, including the rights to a fair trial and freedom of expression, and calling for their immediate release and redress.
