Dr. Najeeb Mohammed Al-Nuaimi
Dr Najeeb Mohammed Al-Nuaimi is a Qatari human rights lawyer and defender. He served as Qatar’s Minister of Justice from 1995 until 1997 and has long represented prisoners of conscience and critics of the state, including the Qatari poet Mohammed Rashid Al-Ajami. On 08 January 2017 Dr Al-Nuaimi learned by text message from the Public Prosecution that he had been placed under an arbitrary travel ban without explanation, a restriction that human rights organisations said lacked any legal basis and was imposed in retaliation for his peaceful human rights work. Although the Qatari Appeal Court revoked the travel ban on 30 May 2017 and ordered its cancellation, the State Security Bureau later renewed the ban on 26 June 2017.
A former prisoner of the Internal Security Forces “Lekhwiya” camp in the Al-Duhail area of Doha, a facility for detainees held on terrorism, drug, and cybercrime charges, reported that Dr Al-Nuaimi was arrested and detained in this facility in May 2025. A week before his arrest, two employees of Al-Nuaimi’s law firm, Mohamed Al-Masri and Hamdi Al-Katib, both Egyptian nationals, were detained. Dr. Al-Nuaimi remains imprisoned on charges related to an alleged criminal case. His two aides were released in August 2025.
