Dr Osama Al-Hasani, Saudi-Australian academic and human rights defender, is a scholar holding a PhD in information systems and a former faculty member at the Faculty of King Abdulaziz University who was arrested in Tangier, Morocco on 08 February 2021 four hours after his arrival to visit his Moroccan wife and their newborn child at the request of the Saudi authorities via an Interpol notice. He was then forcibly extradited to Saudi Arabia on 13 March 2021 where he was detained by the Saudi regime without transparent charges or due process, later being sentenced by the Specialised Criminal Court in Riyadh to a four-year prison term in a deeply flawed judicial process that human rights organisations characterised as politically motivated and lacking basic standards of fairness. Reports from 16 January 2025 indicate that although his four-year sentence has now expired he continues to be arbitrarily detained by Saudi authorities in violation of international human rights obligations and his prolonged incarceration without legal justification, prompting sustained calls from organisations for his immediate and unconditional release and compensation for the violations he has endured under the Saudi judicial and security apparatus.
