Dr. Riham Yaqoub was a prominent Iraqi woman human rights defender and nutrition and fitness specialist. On 19 August 2020, she was assassinated in her car by unknown gunmen. Her killing came on the heels of a targeted online hate campaign against her, and she had been receiving anonymous threats since 2018. Dr. Yaqoub was an active participant in the protests that took place in Basra in 2018, and was known for standing openly against injustice and advocating for women’s health and fitness.
