Dr. Salman Al-Oudah
Dr. Salman Al-Oudah is a Saudi religious scholar and reformist preacher who was arrested on 07 September 2017 after posting a tweet calling for the “unity of hearts” during the diplomatic crisis between Saudi Arabia and Qatar. In 2018 he was secretly tried before the Saudi Specialised Criminal Court on thirty-seven charges including supporting the Arab Spring and calling for the release of detainees on social media, with the prosecution seeking the death penalty against him. Since his arrest he has been held in prolonged solitary confinement for more than seven years, during which his health has severely deteriorated, with reports of him losing about half his hearing and eyesight, being denied medical care and family visits, and subjected to treatment amounting to torture or other cruel and inhuman punishment under international law. Despite international condemnation, as from the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention which declared his detention arbitrary, Al-Oudah remains imprisoned and at risk of execution, with human rights organisations continuing to call for his immediate and unconditional release.
