Fatima Saad

Fatima Saad, of Syrian origin, is a citizen journalist, media activist and human rights defender known under the pseudonym “Farah Al-Rayes” who was arbitrarily arrested on 28 June 2012 in Latakia after security forces raided her family home and confiscated her mobile phone, camera and memory card. Saad had been documenting protests, reporting on the suffering of residents and the urgent need for food and medicine, and had shared pro-revolutionary songs. She was transferred first to the Political Security Branch in Latakia, where she was subjected to torture, resulting in severe deterioration of her health, including liver damage, and prompting her transfer to a military hospital in Latakia. On 17 July 2012, Saad was moved to General Intelligence Branch 291 in Damascus, where her physical condition reportedly continued to decline rapidly. Fears for her life intensified, and sources later indicated that she died under torture or as a result of her injuries, possibly on 23 October 2012, though formal confirmation remains lacking.
