Fawzia Al-Otaibi
Fawzia Al-Otaibi is a Saudi women’s rights defender and the elder sister of fellow activists Manahel and Maryam Al-Otaibi. In 2016, the three sisters initiated the online campaign “#IAmMyOwnGuardian”, aiming to abolish the country’s male guardianship system. Shortly after the campaign grew, both Fawzia and Maryam were arrested, although they were later released. In 2019, Fawzia was fined for “public indecency” after posting a video of herself dancing at a concert in Riyadh. Following the incident, she relocated to Dubai. Upon returning to Saudi Arabia in 2022, she was summoned by authorities, but fearing renewed persecution, she left for Bahrain and later Turkey. After failing to appear for questioning, she was placed under a travel ban. Since 2023, she has resided in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, and has continued her advocacy work from abroad. She has also spoken out publicly in support of her sister Manahel, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison in January 2024 for her peaceful online activism. Fawzia has reported receiving death threats as a result of her continued efforts to draw international attention to the repression of women in Saudi Arabia.
