Feryal Jahjah
Feryal Jahjah, from Tartus city, is an inspector with the rank of judge at the state-run General Authority for Control and Inspection and human rights defender, who was arrested on 14 January 2021 by personnel from the regime Criminal Security Branch’s Cybercrime Department after being summoned for investigation over accusations that she had criticised corruption and poor living conditions on her Facebook account. Jahjah was taken to Adra Central Prison in the Damascus suburbs governorate and charged with “weakening the nation’s psyche”. Her case reflects the broader use of cybercrime laws by Syrian authorities to silence dissent. The arrest of Jahjah occurred in the context of a wider crackdown that also targeted other figures including Hala Al-Jarf, a TV presenter, Farah Khazim, a student, and Falah Younis Suleiman, with all accused under Articles 285, 286 and 287 of the Syrian Penal Code as well as Article 28 of the Anti-Cyber Crime Law of “communicating with and dealing with suspicious websites”. Jahjah was released in May 2021 under decree n°13 of 2021.
