Firas Shasan is a Yemeni journalist who was arrested by Egyptian authorities on 01 February 2014 while attending the Cairo International Book Fair in Egypt. Shasan was detained for filming a report for television without having obtained official permission.  The charges against him relate to working as a media professional without permits. This case must be understood in the broader context of Egyptian authorities frequent use of vague regulations to suppress journalistic activity, especially at cultural events such as book fairs.
