Hala Fouad Badawi

Hala Fouad Badawi is a Yemeni journalist and media activist who was arrested on 30 December 2021 after publishing reports and social media posts calling for improved living conditions and accountability for corruption in government institutions. She was detained by the Yemeni military intelligence command in Hadhramaut Governorate and initially held in the Military Intelligence prison before being transferred to the Central Prison in Mukalla on 4 January 2022. During her detention, Hala Fouad Badawi was subjected to physical abuse on the third day of her imprisonment, she was beaten until she bled and subsequently moved to the Central Prison for treatment. In January 2022, she was charged with “spying and communicating with foreign agencies”. After spending over 100 days in detention, the Specialized Criminal Court in Hadhramaut Governorate ordered her release on 19 April 2022.
