Hani Al-Zitani

Hani Al-Zitani is a Syrian human rights defender and member of the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression, who was arrested on 16 February 2012 by Syrian Air Force Intelligence during a raid on SCM offices and subsequently charged with ‘publicising terrorist acts’ by the Anti-Terrorism Court. He spent over three years detained in Hama Prison until he was unexpectedly released on 17 or 18 July 2015 as his name appeared on a list of individuals granted a presidential amnesty, prompting relief among human rights groups even though his colleague Mazen Darwish remained detained pending a ‘security check’.
