Hassan Al-Banna Mubarak

Hassan Al-Banna Mubarak is an Egyptian journalist who has faced repeated harassment, arrest, and detention by the Egyptian authorities because of his professional and political activities. He was first arrested on 4 February 2018 during a broad security crackdown ahead of Egypt’s presidential elections and remained in detention for nearly two and a half years. During this period, he faced accusations of joining a group established in violation of the law, spreading false news and statements, and misusing social media. He was released on 10 May 2020 but continued to live under the shadow of surveillance and threats to his freedom. In April 2021, Mubarak traveled to Jordan looking for a job opportunity. However, Jordanian security authorities denied him entry, refused to allow him onward travel to a third country, and insisted on deporting him to Egypt against his will. On 18 April, he was forced to board a return flight to Cairo under security escort. Mubarak stayed in touch with his family on the day of his arrival, when he informed them that he had entered the National Security Bureau (Mabahith) at Cairo airport. Shortly afterward, all communication was cut off, and his family reported him missing. He was held incommunicado for about thirty hours before being released by the Egyptian National Security Bureau.
