Hassan Mushaima
Hassan Mushaima is a Bahraini opposition leader and Bahrain’s oldest political prisoner. On 22 June 2011, Hassan Mushaima was sentenced to life in prison by a Bahraini military court for attempting to overthrow the monarchy because of his role in the 2011 pro-democracy demonstrations and as a founding member of the Al-Haq Movement. Since 2021, he has been held in prolonged solitary confinement at a medical centre in Bahrain, where he is consistently denied adequate medical care, sunlight and ventilation. Despite his age and serious health issues, including cancer and chronic conditions, the Bahraini authorities continue to subject him to inhumane treatment.
