Hussain Al-Qallaf

Hussain Al‑Qallaf is a former member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, who was arrested in July 2024 after posting a social media recording criticising the Ministry of Interior’s measures regarding Shiʽa religious rituals during Muharram. He was detained for twenty‑one days and formally charged with insulting the government and challenging the rights of His Highness the Amir. On 25 July 2024 the Criminal Court acquitted him, accepting his defence that his remarks targeted government policies not the Emir, but following an appeal by the Public Prosecution the Court of Appeal on 15 October 2024 reversed the acquittal and sentenced him to two years imprisonment with hard labour. In April 2025 the Court of Cassation upheld that verdict along with similar rulings against other former MPs accused of criticising authorities.
