Hussain Khattab
Hussain Khattab, originally from Al-Safira in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, is a journalist and media activist who worked for the Turkish state-run broadcaster TRT Arabic and served in the executive office of the Aleppo Media Union. He was assassinated on 12 December 2020 while filming a report about the COVID-19 pandemic near a cemetery in Al-Bab in Aleppo governorate. Masked gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire, striking him multiple times. The perpetrators remain unidentified. Prior to his killing, on 27 September 2020, Khattab posted on his Facebook page that a man identified as Ahmed Al-Abdullah had pointed a gun at his face and previously tried to prevent him reporting in the village of Tar’hine, stating, “The person who carried a weapon and raised it in my face was Ahmed Al-Abdullah (Al-Sous)… What can I do with someone who tried to kill me and put a weapon in my face, and before that he wanted to prevent me from entering the area of Tarheen and tried to prevent me from filming there?”. At the time of his death, he had covered sensitive topics such as interviews with chemical attack victims, conditions of internally displaced people, and bombing incidents in Jarablus, and had around 5,000 followers on his Facebook page.
