Hussam Al-Kaabi

Hussam Al-Kaabi is an Iraqi journalist and correspondent for UTV Satellite Channel in Najaf who has been subjected to judicial targeting in connection with his reporting on corruption in a context of pressure on media freedom in Iraq. Al-Kaabi has been actively engaged in investigative journalism addressing corruption cases in his province, which he considers an essential part of his professional duties and role in protecting the public interest. On 17 February 2026, he publicly reported that an arrest warrant had been issued against him following a complaint related to his publication of an official document issued by a member of the Najaf Investment Authority, in which allegations were made against senior officials. On 09 March 2026, Hussam Al-Kaabi stated that he had spent several hours at the Najaf Investigation Court in relation to multiple cases filed against him, including three publishing-related complaints, two of which were handled by the National Security Service in Najaf. He reported that the authorities had issued arrest warrants, search warrants and summonses against him, including direct summonses to his home, without coordination with the Journalists Syndicate, despite the non-criminal nature of the cases. Hussam Al-Kaabi affirmed that the proceedings were linked to his journalistic work exposing corruption and publicly rejected intimidation and threats, stating his intention to continue his reporting.
