Ismail Al-Muqbali
Ismaeel Al-Meqbali is an Omani blogger and human rights defender known for his involvement in the 2011 Sohar protests, where he was briefly arrested before being released. He continued to advocate for detainees and criticize the political situation in Oman through his social media platforms. In 2012, he was sentenced to one and a half years in prison on charges of “insulting the Sultan,” a charge frequently used to silence peaceful critics, and was later released under an amnesty by Sultan Qaboos. On 23 August 2015, while spending time with his family in the United Arab Emirates, the Internal Security Service (ISS) summoned him to appear before the Special Division of the Omani Police General Command in Muscat. He returned to Oman and complied with the summons on 29 August, after which he disappeared. Reports confirmed that he was being held incommunicado at the Special Division in the Al-Qurum area, the executive body of the ISS. He was released on 03 September 2015.
