Jawa Rawan Mahmoud, from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, is a journalist and reporter for Shar Press TV. On 23 February 2024, Mahmoud was detained twice by security forces in Sulaymaniyah while covering a peaceful teachers’ protest demanding unpaid salaries. She was forcibly removed from the protest area both times in an apparent attempt to prevent media coverage. Reliable sources confirmed that protesters’ tents were attacked by security forces and several demonstrators were temporarily detained. Despite this, she continues to report on civil movements and violations of rights in the region.
