Kamel Jendoubi
Kamel Jendoubi is a prominent Tunisian human rights defender and political figure. He was exiled in France for over 15 years due to his human rights activism and was deprived of his Tunisian passport between 2000 and 2011. Kamel Jendoubi founded the Committee for the Respect of Freedoms and Human Rights in Tunisia in 1994 and was elected president of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network in 2003. After the 2011 Tunisian revolution, he returned to the country and served as president of the Independent High Authority for Elections, overseeing Tunisia’s first free elections. He was later appointed Minister in charge of Relations with Constitutional Institutions, Civil Society, and Human Rights from February 2015 to August 2016. In 2017, Kamel Jendoubi was selected to chair the United Nations Group of Eminent International and Regional Experts on Yemen, a position he held until October 2021. Throughout his career, Kamel Jendoubi has faced smear campaigns and attacks, notably from the United Arab Emirates, which accused him of ties to extremist groups in retaliation for his role in exposing human rights violations in Yemen. He continues to speak out against rights violations in Tunisia, including state-sponsored racism and the repression of migrants and civil society.
