Karar Al-Zirjawi
Karar Al-Zirjawi is an Iraqi civil society activist. On 07 March 2024, he was arrested in the city of Nasiriyah by a special force coming from Baghdad. Local sources confirmed that his arrest was linked to a malicious lawsuit filed against him by a member of the Iraqi Parliament in what his colleagues believed was retaliation for his extensive participation in the recent popular movement, including the October 2019 protests. In response to his arrest, dozens of demonstrators blocked off areas of Nasiriyah to protest and demand his release. After this massive wave of solidarity, he was released on 19 March 2024, and the lawsuit was dropped.
Al-Zirjawi was arrested again on 13 October 2024 by the Ministry of Interior’s Intelligence Agency and charged with inciting protests. On 02 December 2024, the Central Investigation Court in Baghdad decided to release on bail all detained civil society activists and demonstrators from Dhi Qar Governorate.
