Khaled Al-Kamal

Khaled Mohammed Al-Kamal is a human rights lawyer and legal advisor who has faced repeated harassment linked to his professional activities in Yemen. On 11 December 2021, while submitting a request to the Public Prosecution at the Central Prison to transfer one of his clients between prison sections, he was summoned by the prison director, Mohammed Al-Makthi. Although Khaled Mohammed Al-Kamal informed Al-Makthi of his purpose, the director seized his personal lawyer’s identity card and threatened to imprison him. Despite the Public Prosecutor Ammar Al-Hamzi calling twice for the card’s return, Al-Makthi refused to return it. Earlier, in October 2021, Khaled Mohammed Al-Kamal was suspended from his job at a health insurance company, reportedly because he was the lawyer of Intisar Al-Hammadi. The Yemeni Bar Association condemned the prison director’s conduct in a letter to the Minister of Interior on 15 December 2021, calling for Al-Makthi to return the lawyer’s identity card and to be investigated and prosecuted according to the law. Previously, on 02 June 2021, while working in the Capital’s Secretariat, Khaled was informed of an arbitrary suspension issued by the Legal Sector on 26 May 2021. He appealed the decision, affirming his clean record over more than 20 years of service.
