Khaled Ayish

Khaled Ayish, a Yemeni human rights defender and President of the National Forum for Human Rights in Al-Hudaydah, has faced an assassination attempt and ongoing threats due to his peaceful work documenting violations in Yemen. On 20 February 2013 at approximately 1:00 pm, while driving in the Kilo 7 area of Al-Hudaydah, an explosion caused all four tyres of his car to burst. Investigations revealed that the tyres had been filled with cooking gas, a method believed to be within the capacity of state security forces. Ayish has since received repeated threats from security sources demanding that he cease his work, but he declared that he would not be deterred and would continue documenting violations committed by security forces, influential figures and armed groups, including extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. The Gulf Centre for Human Rights stressed that the attempt on his life and continuous threats are linked directly to his legitimate human rights activities and expressed grave concern for his safety, urging the Yemeni authorities to guarantee his protection and ensure that defenders, activists and journalists can operate without fear of reprisals.
