Khalil Ma’touq

Khalil Ma’touq (also spelled Matouk) is a Syrian human rights lawyer and the executive director of the Syrian Center for Legal Studies and Research. He has been a prominent advocate for political prisoners and human rights in Syria. On 2 October 2012, Khalil Ma’touq was arrested at a government checkpoint in Damascus and has since been forcibly disappeared. Despite numerous reports from former detainees who have claimed to have seen him in various detention facilities, the former Syrian government continued to deny any involvement in his disappearance. Khalil Ma’touq suffers from a severe lung disease, and during his detention, he was denied necessary medical treatment. His fate remained unknown for 13 years.

On 31 October 2025, artist Raneem Ma’touq announced her father’s death on her Facebook page: “I, his daughter, on behalf of my mother and brother, officially announce the death of Khalil Ma’touq – a man who mastered laughter in all circumstances, perhaps even in his final moments before his execution.”
